Keeping your pond clean and healthy for fish is the most important aspect of a fish or Koi pond. We use a wide range of filters to suit the pond and the owners needs.
Thankfully the days of being arm deep in dirty filter media are pretty much behind us with many new innovations in filter technology over the recent years has meant that the maintenance can be a much easier process. We can upgrade or design from a scratch a filter system that will enable you to be as hands on or off as you wish.
The various types of filter systems we install are the following:-
Flow Through Filters
In Pond Filters
We supply a variety of manufacturers including Oase, Evolution Aqua, Hozelock and Burtons.
There are many factors that determine the size of the filter that is required. The pond size and volume, the type of fish being kept if any, the location of the pond and the type of pond you have, being gravity fed or pump fed.
Gravity fed ponds usually have a bottom drain in the pond connected to the filter system and the pump pulling water through the filter then back to the pond, pump fed ponds have a pump in the pond supplying the filter which then pushes water through the filter and drops back into the pond.
Once the type of filter has been decided the next vital parts of the system are the pump and UVC. All filters and UVC's have maximum flow rates so it is very important to select the correct pump to suit the system to allow the nitrification cycle to complete which is when Ammonia from fish waste is broken down which produces Nitrite and then Nitrate and once the filter has matured clean water is then returned back to the pond. Essentially your filter is a mini waste treatment plant.
A UVC is required (Ultra Violet Clarifier) is required to keep the water from going green with Algae, as water passes through the UVC the Algae is clumped together into larger pieces that is then collected in your filter, If the flow rate is to quick there is not enough time for this process to complete.
The other aspects of your filtration to consider are surface skimmers, air pumps and polishers.
Surface Skimmers draw the surface water through a basket which collects debris off the top of the pond which helps prevent it making its way to the bottom of the pond there are many types of skimmer to suit every pond from built in wall skimmers similar to a swimming pool to independent floating types.
Air pumps are a must for any serious fish keeper and serve a multitude of benefits. Air pumps pump oxygen into the water all fish require dissolved oxygen in the water to stay alive, we advise our customers to have an air pump, should your pond pump and filter system stop working for any reason the air pump will keep the fish alive until it can be fixed. The other main purpose of air in the pond is that it helps produce beneficial Aerobic bacteria that use oxygen and rapidly break down organic compounds (pond waste). Many filters now use air in them for moving beds for this purpose as well. An Aerated Bottom Drain also helps draw waste from the pond into the drain creating clearer water.
To get that gin clear water that most Koi keepers crave the use of a polisher in addition to there main filtration system, There are several types including the Evolution Aqua Tempest.
